Falling Patients: Safety for Patients and Caregivers
The risks involved with a falling patient are significant. The negative consequences include: Injuries to the patient that often times lead to a professional liability lawsuit; And caregiver injuries that lead to costly workers' compensation claims. Additionally, there is exposure to regulatory scrutiny as a result of 2009 changes to the California Health and Safety Code (Sections 1279.6 and 1279.7) in SB 158 related to patient safety events that specifically include falls.
The subject of falling patients in healthcare settings is typically addressed through fall prevention programs. At the 2009 California Association of Health Facilities (CAHF) convention, Boldt Risk Management Solutions presented a novel approach to addressing this issue.
A 50 minute in-service has been developed by Aikidoist Denise Terry with the assistance of Ron Dean and Michael Boldt. The in-service introduces caregivers to the principals of safe falling and demonstrates techniques for preventing falls and safely guiding a patient to the ground when a fall becomes unavoidable.
See Michael Boldt's introduction to Denise Terry's program below along with a sample of Ms Terry's 50 minute in-service.
